设法捉拿金鱼怪

Capturing the Goldfish Monster

Tangseng and his disciples travelled west for months, and it was fall again. One day, they walked until the sun went down, still seeing no sign of a village. Tangseng could only keep walking under the light of the moon. As they walked, they heard the splashing sound of water ahead. As they walked toward the sound, they saw a river. Bajie picked up a rock and threw it into the depths of the river. They heard a gurgling sound and no reply. He turned his head and said to Tangseng: “This is very deep.” Tangseng asked: “How wide is this river?” Wukong said: “Beside the river over there is a stone tablet. Everything will be clear once we go over and see.”

The master and disciples came to the tablet, and on the tablet were the words “Tongtian River”. Below that in small font were the words “The River is eight hundred miles wide, and there has always been few travelers”. Tangseng grew worried when he saw this.

At this time, Shaseng pointed toward the upstream and said: “Master, there is light there, so there must be a settlement. Let’s first stay there for the night, so tomorrow we could find a boat to cross.” Tangseng nodded at this idea. Together they went toward the light. When they came close, they saw that it was a big village with a few hundred families. Tangseng stopped before a house and said to his disciples: “Wait here; let me go inside to knock.”

Tangseng stepped inside the courtyard and knocked on the door. An old man came out and asked: “Elder where are you from? What task do you have to do in the dark?” Tangseng said: “The Tang dynasty sent me west to seek the scriptures. Because it is already dark, we want to find a place to stay for the night.”

The old man shook his head and said: “Monks do not lie. It is a few thousand miles from the Tang to here. How could you, just one person, get here? Tangseng said: “I have three disciples, and they alare very capable, and could slay devils and monsters. I could get here only because of their protection along the way.” The old man heard this and said: “Then please invite them inside too!” Tangseng then called the three inside.

As soon as they got inside, Bajie started yelling: I’m so hungry! I’m hungry!” The old man said: “We made some steamed buns and rice, but because we have things to worry about, we didn’t eat them. Elder, you can use them.” When he finished, others of the household took out rice, buns, and some vegetables, and invited Tangseng to eat.

Tangseng and his disciples ate, and then the old man walked out. Not long later, he brought with him another old man with a cane, who seemed to be a little older than him. The two kneeled down in front of Tangseng, and as tears were streaming they said: “Elder came from the Tang and said to have the ability to capture monsters, so please help our family!” Tangseng helped up the two old men and asked for an explanation.

They learned that this village was called Chen Village, and these two’s last name was Chen too. The one with a walking cane was the big brother, and his name was Qing Chen. The one who had come out to open the door for Tangseng was the little brother Deng Chen. Qing Chen only had one daughter that was eight, called Yichengjin. Deng Chen only had a seven year old son called Guanbao Chen. Both men were over fifty years old, and they only had these two children, whom they cared very much for. But inside Tongtian River was King Linggan, and every year he had to eat a small boy and a little girl, or else there will be flooding and death for the village. This year, it was Qing Chen and his brother that had to give children. They would never give out two cute, lively kids to feed a monster. Therefore, all day their family mourns, but still they couldn’t think of an idea. Today when they heard that Tangseng could slay monsters, so therefore they begged him to rescue them.

Wukong heard this and said to Deng Chen: “Bring me your child to see.” Deng Chen quickly went out, and not long later he came in with his son. The kid had a fruit in his hand, and as he ate he jumped around, having no idea of what was happening. Wukong saw him, and reciting his incantation, turned into the exact same appearance as Guanbao Chen. The two kids played under the light hand in hand. Wukong then smothered his face and turned back into his original form and said: “Do I look like your child?” Deng Chen said: “Yes! Very alike!” Wukong said: “I will go for your son to King Linggan, ok?” Deng Chen kneeled down and thanked him.

Wukong then said to Qing Chen: “Our long mouthed brother will turn into your daughter to go with me to King Linggan, ok?” Qing Chen frantically went inside the house to carry out his daughter. Bajie recited the incantation, shook his body, shouted “transform!”, and really turned into Yichengjin. The head was like Yichengjin, but the belly was a little fat, and didn’t look like a girl. Wukong blew once at his belly, then patted it with his hand, and surely Bajie’s belly transformed too into the girl.

Bajie turned back into his original form. Wukong asked Chen Qing and Deng Chen: “How do we send the boy and the girl?” Qing Chen said: “On the shore of Tongtian River is a King Linggan temple. At 10PM the sacrifice will sit on two big plates, and the plates will be on a table. After midnight, the king will come to feast.”

Bajie panicked after hearing this: “Does the monster first eat the boy or the girl?” Deng Chen said: Rumors say that the king first eats the boy, and then he eats the girl. Bajie heard this and grew relieved: “As this says, my luck is not bad!”

The people of Chen Village carried Wukong and Bajie to the river’s temple. At midnight, there was a strong wind. Bajie said: “No, the monster’s coming!” Wukong said: “Don’t speak, I will do the talking.” Not long after, from the door came in a monster, with bright starry eyes and giant sawed teeth. The monster stood at the temple door, and with his hands on his hips shouted: “Little boy and girl, what is your last name?” Wukong said: “My last name is Chen, my father is Deng Chen and Qing Chen.”

The monster heard this and thought it strange: “This boy is very brave; he answered me!” So he asked again: “What are your names?” Wukong said: “The boy is Guanbao Chen, and the girl is Yichengjin.” The monster was even more surprised. He wanted to eat the boy, but also didn’t dare to, so he said: “In the past years I eat the boy first, but this year I will eat the girl first.”

Bajie grew frantic and said: “King, do it the old way; don’t eat me first.” The monster didn’t answer, extending his hand to reach for Bajie. Bajie jumped down, returned to his original form, raised his palladium, and swung at the monster. There was the sound “Dang!”, and the monster, given a palladium, transformed into black wind to escape. Wukong shouted: “Chase him!”, and the two people went after the monster.

The monster didn’t bring a weapon, so he couldn’t battle with Wukong and Bajie. As he ran he turned his head and asked: “Where do you monk come from, coming to bully people?” Wukong shouted back: “Monster, listen! We come from the Tang in the east, and we are the disciples of Tangseng, who was sent to the west to seek the scriptures. Quickly come to meet your death!” Bajie raised his palladium and stroke at the monster. The monster dodged this and dove inside Tongtian River.

Wukong said to Bajie: “We don’t have to chase. This monster must live inside Tongtian River. When dawn comes, let’s think of a way to capture him and get Master across the river.” The two came back to Chen Village, and told everyone about the happenings at the temple. Deng Chen and Qing Chen were both very happy, inviting Tangseng and his disciples to rest.

When the monster got back to the bottom, he sat there angrily. The little devils in that lived underwater asked him: “In other years King comes back happy. What happened this year?” The monster said: “My luck has gone off this year. I met with the disciples of Tangseng. They turned into a boy and a girl, and I almost lost my life. I have heard before that whoever eats Tangseng’s flesh will become immortal. But seeing that his disciples are this strong, I don’t think it will be possible, so I am not happy.”

At this time, the Mandarin Fish Woman laughed and said: “It isn’t hard for King to capture Tangseng! King could cast a spell so that there would be cold winds and snow tonight so that tomorrow, there would be a thick ice layer over Tongtian River. Then, we turn into pedestrians to walk on the ice. Tangseng is very hurried in seeking the scriptures, so when he sees the pedestrians, he will go onto the ice to cross the river. When he gets to the middle, King could break open the ice, having them fall into the water. Then, we could eat Tangseng.” The monster was so jumped up in happiness after hearing this and shouted repeatedly: “Good! Good! Good!”

Tangseng and his disciples stayed at Chen Village for the night. At dawn the next day, they suddenly felt very cold. When they opened the door, they saw that it was snowing. It snowed all the way to dusk, making the temperature even lower. At dawn the third day, they heard someone call out on the streets: "Such cold weather! Tongtian River has frozen!"

When Tangseng heard this, he went beside the river with his disciples to view. The river top looked like a glassy mirror as expected. There were also many people lugging things walking on the ice. Tangseng became very happy and said: "If these people could walk on the ice, we could too!"

Tangseng and his disciples happily continued on their journey. As they walked on Tongtian River, there was suddenly a giant sound, and with it the ice under them cracked apart! Wukong jumped into the air, but the others all fell into the icy water. This was because the monster was already waiting under the ice sheets. When he heard the sound of hooves, he knew that Tangseng had come, so he used his soceracy to break the ice layer and capture Tangseng.

Bajie and Shaseng fell into the river, but they both had aqueous abilities. They split apart a water trail and jumped onto the surface. Wukong was waiting on the river surface. When they arrived, they discussed plans about how to rescue Master.

Wukong said: "My abilities in the water are limited, so it must be you two to go into the water first." Shaseng said: "You can wait in the air. If we couldn't win over the monster, we will lure him out of the water so that you could fight him." Wukong said: "Quickly go! Quickly go! Rescuing Master is the priority." Bajie and Shaseng jumped into Tongtian River, split open a water path, and continued forward. After a little while under the surface, they saw a palace, and on it were the words "Home of the Sea Turtle". Bajie charged to the door and shouted: "Monster, quickly let my Master out!" The little devils and monsters inside the door heard this, and ran inside to report: "Kind, outside there are two monks who want their master!"

The monster said: "These must be Tangseng's disciples. Quickly bring me my armor!" The small monsters swiftly bought him his armor. The monster put on his armor, and holding two giant bronze hammers he led about a hundred small monsters outside and said to Bajie and Shaseng: "Where do you monks come from, that you dare to be noisy at my doors?"

Bajie waved the palladium in his hand and shouted: "I am Tangseng's second disciple Bajie Zhu. A few days ago I turned into the girl Yichengjin. Then you still wanted to eat me; how do you not recognize you grandpa now?"

The monster grew angry upon hearing this, saying: "Fat monk! That night I didn't bring any weapons, so you hurt my back. Today I will fight three rounds with you. If you win, I will let go of your Master. But if you lose to me, I will eat you too!" Before he finished, Shaseng raised his cane and yelled: “Monster, don’t brag! First take a cane!” As he said so, he raised his cane and attempted to smack the monster. Bajie raised his palladium and attacked the monster from the other side.

The three fought underwater without victory or defeat for more than two hours. Bajie saw that they couldn’t win over the monster, so he made an eye signal to Shaseng. The two pretended to be losing, dragging their weapons and running back. The monster closely chased after them.

In the air, Wukong saw the waves rolling along with the cries of battle, and with this he knew that the monster was coming. He let past Bajie and Shaseng, and as soon as the monster came out he attacked with his staff. The monster got out of the way and fought with his hammers. In mist and clouds the two battled for three rounds. The monster couldn’t stand it, so he dove into the water, leaving behind only a few splashes.

Wukong came to the shore, and Shaseng said: Brother, this monster couldn’t do well on land, but in the water he is a beast. Bajie and I couldn’t win him combined. Bajie said: “Brother, Shaseng and I will lure him out of the water. This time strike only after precise aim.”

As the three were talking, they suddenly heard someone in the air call out: “Wukong, don’t be rushed! I have come!” Wukong raised his head and saw Guanyin with a bamboo basket in hand.

Guanyin smiled and said: “Quickly come to see me catch the monster.” As he said so, he took a silk string and tied it to the basket. Then, holding the thread, he threw the basket into the water. Guanyin recited an incantation twice, and then lifted the basket. Inside the basket was a bright red goldfish that was still blinking and moving its gills. Wukong asked: “Guanyin, where is the monster? Guanyin said: “Just look at the goldfish inside this basket.” Shaseng said: “How could this fish have this much power?” Guanyin said: “It was originally a fish in my lotus pond. This morning when I went to the pool to marvel at the lotus flowers, I noticed that the goldfish was gone. I calculated that the fish had become a monster at Tongtian River, and was harming your master, so I came quickly to capture him. Now quickly go rescue your master!” Bajie and Shaseng again jumped into Tongtian River, and with their weapons killed all the little devils and dragged their master onto shore.

Tangseng and his disciples were about to cross when someone in the water yelled: “Saint! I will deliver you across the river!” Not long later, from the water came a soft-shelled turtle that was as big as three houses. Actually, the “Home of the Sea Turtle” belonged to the sea turtle, but was taken over by the monster. Now that the sea turtle could go home, he happily volunteered to carry Tangseng across the river.

When the turtle came onto land, Wukong said to Tangseng: “Master, let’s stand on his body to cross the river.” Tangseng seemed a little scared, so the turtle said: Master be at ease. My back is even steadier than boats.” As they crossed, Tangseng only felt wind beside his ears, and it seemed like flying. The turtle carried Tangseng and his disciples, and in less than a day, they covered all eight hundred miles of Tongtian River.

Tangseng came to shore and thanked the turtle. The turtle said: “You don’t have to thank me. I have practiced for many years in Tongtian River. Even though I can speak the human language, I still couldn’t be human form. I heard that Rulai knows the past and the future, so when master sees him, could you ask for me when I will become a human?” Tangseng nodded and said: “Relax. I will ask for sure.” The turtle nodded in thanks, and went back into the water.
