Chapter 3: Happy About His Staff

Near the Curtain of Water Cavern there was a monster who came to the mountain often, wreaking havoc every time. After Wukong came back, he chased the monster away, and also took his knife as a weapon.

One day, Wukong said to the other monkeys: “I want to get you some weapons. When future enemies come to mess around, you guys will be able to win over. But where should I go to get weapons?” At this time, four monkeys walked up and said to Wukong: “King, if you want weapons, it is going to be easy. East of our mountain for two hundred miles of sea is Aolai Country. Go to the weapon stock and market there, and then buy or make some weapons. Then it would be done.” Wukong became happy and said: “Okay, just wait here, I will be back shortly!”

Wukong rode on a cloud, and in the blink of the eye crossed two hundred miles of ocean and arrived above Aolai Country. He looked down, and saw people walking and doing their business all over the place. Wukong thought: “There must be weapon stores somewhere. I need to think of a plan to get some weapons.” Therefore, he recited an incantation, and then blew a gust of air, which immediately transformed into a typhoon-like wind. The people on the streets, seeing that there was a sudden weather change, went indoors, shutting the doors behind them.

Wukong came down and found the weapon store. He plucked a whole bunch of hairs off himself, and with the shout “turn!” they turned into thousands of hundreds of little monkeys. Some got knives, others carried spears; the strong ones carried three to five weapons while the small ones only got one or two. They carried off all the weapons in the store, and after that, Wukong led them all the way back to Flower-Fruit Mountain.

The big and small monkeys were playing on Flower-Fruit Mountain when suddenly there was darkness in the sky. When they saw that it was millions of monkeys, they were so scared that they went in unison for hiding places. In the blink of an eye, the fake monkeys had already piled the weapons in a pile on the mountain. Wukong came down, and shaking his body once, all the transformed monkeys became his hair again. He yelled: “Children, come get your weapons!” The monkeys came out and saw only Wukong. They all asked why the other scary monkeys were suddenly gone. Wukong told them about the wind, turning little monkeys, and moving the weapons. The small monkeys all clapped jubilantly.

The second day, Wukong said to the monkeys: “You all have weapons, but I feel that my knife is too light and not good for use.” The four old monkeys again came up, and this time asked: “King, are you able to go into the water?” Wukong said: “I have seventy two transformations, and I also have the power of the flipping cloud. I could go anywhere.” One old monkey said: “Under our metal bridge is the East Sea Dragon King’s palace. Inside there surely must be some good weapons!” Wukong was very happy and said: “Okay. I will go quickly and be back shortly!”

Wukong jumped to the bridge, and with an incantation dove inside the water. He separated his water path right into the East Sea all the way to the Dragon Palace. One shrimp soldier came up and asked: “May I please know which god or immortal you are?” Wukong said: “I am the Wukong Sun from Flower-Fruit Mountain. I am the Monkey King, the neighbor of your Dragon King.” The soldier frantically went inside to report: “King, outside there is a Monkey King Wukong Sun from Flower-Fruit Mountain. He is your neighbor, and he is about to enter.” The Dragon King got up and led some soldiers to welcome Wukong.

Wukong went inside and sat down. The Dragon King asked: “May I ask what you come here for?”

Wukong said: “I don’t have a good weapon, so I have come to look for one.”

The king told for a big knife. Wukong felt it and said: “Sorry, this is too light. Please get a heavier one.”

He then got out a three-headed spear. Wukong waved it in the air for a little while, but then put it down, saying: “Still too light! Another one please!” The Dragon King laughed and said: “Monkey King, this spear is three thousand six hundred pounds heavy!” Wukong shook his head, saying: “No, not good to use. Just not perfect!”

The Dragon King told a group of crab soldiers to carry out a spear, saying: “King, this spear is seven thousand two hundred pounds. Please try it out.” Wukong went up, and picking it in his hands waved it for some time before putting it down and saying: “No, this is still too light! This is too light!”

The Dragon King started to get afraid when he heard this, saying: “Monkey King, my palace only has this as a heaviest weapon.” Wukong laughed: “People say that your East Sea Palace is the wealthiest place. I don’t believe that you don’t have treasures! Quickly search!” The King said; “I really don’t have any more.”

As they were speaking, the Dragon Wife and Dragon Daughter came out from behind and said: “King, the needle at the bottom was flashing for the past few days. How about we go and look?”

The King asked: “The needle… could it be a legit weapon?”

The Dragon Wife said: “Who cares if it can be used! Give it to the Monkey King and send him to leave!” The King thought that this made sense, so he said it to Wukong. Wukong said: “Quickly get it for me to see!” The Dragon King said: “It is too heavy. We must have you go and look for yourself.” Wukong said: “Where is the needle? Quickly let me to look!”

The Dragon King led Wukong to the bottom of the sea, and as expected there was suddenly thousands of rays of golden light.

The Dragon King pointed at the object and said: “The one sending light is it.”

Wukong went up and touched it. It was a thick metal column, and it was in total more than six meters high. Wukong hugged the pillar with both arms and said: “Too thick and long. If it were thinner and shorter, it would be better.” As he finished, the pillar shortened and thinned. Wukong then said: “I need it thinner.” As he finished, the pillar again thinned. Wukong was very happy.

Wukong lifted it, and saw that there were two golden hoops on each end with a black section in the middle. Near one end were the words: “As Will Golden Hooped Staff, weighing thirteen thousand five hundred pounds.”

Wukong became very happy, thinking: “This godly needle pretty much could go as you wish; let me try.” He held the needle, and as he walked he mumbled: “If only you were thinner and shorter…” As expected, as he finished, the needle turned only to the thickness of a small bowl. Wukong waved the staff and said to the Dragon King: “Thanks for your help. But I still have one more task to ask of you.” The Dragon King asked: “What thing?” Wukong said: “Now I have a staff, but I still don’t have armor. Could you please give me a set?” The King shook his head, saying: “I really don’t have any.” Wukong raised his staff, threatening: “If there really is none, I will let you try out my new staff!”

The Dragon King frantically said: “Monkey King, please don’t kill me! Let me see if my brothers have some!” Wukong asked: “Who are your brothers?” The Dragon King replied: “They are the Dragon Kings of the south, west, and north seas.” Wukong said: “I will not go. I am only asking you.”

The Dragon King said: “You don’t need to go. I have a drum and a gong. If I knock on them, my brothers will arrive almost immediately.” Wukong said: “Then quickly go to sound them!”

After a little while, the gong and drum sounded. Then a little while later, the three other Dragon Kings arrived outside the underwater palace.

HE TheTheTHe The South Sea Dragon King asked; “Big brother, for what pressuring matter do you knock on the gong and drum?” The East Sea Dragon King replied: “It is bad! This morning a Monkey King from Flower-Fruit Mountain came to get weapons. He said a three headed spear was too small, and my heavy spear was too light. In the end, he took away the needle at the bottom of the ocean. Now he is in my palace asking for armor or something of that sort. I don’t have what he needs, so I told you to come. If you have any, just give it to him so we could quickly send him away.”

The South Dragon King’s anger arose with each word, saying: “Then how would it be? Quickly capture him!” The old Dragon King quickly said: “No, no, don’t do it. The monkey is very strong. If you started fighting, my palace would be reduced to ruins.” The West Sea Dragon King said: “Then let’s give him a set of armor and send him away. Then we could tell the Jade Emperor, and have the Emperor kill him.”

The North Dragon King said: “I have a set of cloudwalk shoes.”

The West Dragon King said: “I have a golden set of armor.”

The South Dragon King said: “I have a golden crown.”

The East Sea Dragon King was very happy, inviting them into his palace to give their promised items to Wukong.

Wukong put on the given items, and thanked the Dragon Kings: “Thanks, thanks a lot!” He twirled his staff and said: “Small, small, small.” The staff turned to the size of a needle, which he hid inside his ear. Then, he happily went back to the Curtain of Water Cavern.

Inside the cavern, the Monkey King, with his golden armor, cloud walking shoes, and crown, told the small monkeys of all that happened while getting his weapons. When the little monkeys heard, they all became a jubilant group.

After he got his staff, Wukong let the four old monkeys become four generals who would lead the smaller monkeys. Wukong himself became friend with others of the area like the Niumo King and Shituo King. They were really friendly, inviting each other. It was a busy time.
