The Monkey King Gains Skill

The Monkey King left Flower-Fruit Mountain, searched for a numerous number of years, but still could not find an immortal. One day, he was walking in the mountain when suddenly he heard someone sing in the forest: “Oh my neighbor is an immortal!” When the Monkey King heard the word “immortal”, he grew very happy: “So the immortal is hiding here!”

The Monkey King jumped into the forest and saw a logger singing. The Monkey King went up and said: “Old immortal, so you were hiding here!” The logger looked at the Monkey King and said: “No, no! I am a lumberjack, not an immortal.” The Monkey King said: “If you aren’t an immortal, why do you sing about immortals?” The lumberjack heard, and started laughing: “I am not an immortal, but my neighbor is an immortal!” The lumberjack told the Monkey King: “On this mountain is a Triple Star Cavern. Inside the cavern is an immortal called Master Puti. If you follow this path south for a short distance, you will find his house.”

The Monkey King thanked the logger and walked out of the forest. Walking along the path, he went over a hillside and suddenly he saw a cavern in front of him. The door was tightly closed, and on the door there was a sign that said: “Triple Star Cavern”. The Monkey King looked for a long time, but still didn’t dare to knock. At this time he grew hungry, so he jumped into the branches to feast on the fruit. He was on the tree eating when he heard the door opening. From the doorway walked a juvenile, who said to the Monkey King: “My master told me to open the door because there was a person waiting to learn immortal ways outside. So, that must be you?” The Monkey King quickly jumped down from the tree and said: “Yes, it is me, it is me.” The juvenile said: “Then follow me inside.”

The Monkey King sorted out his clothes a little and followed the juvenile inside the cavern. Master Puti was sitting on a high seat, and more than ten disciples were standing at the two sides. The Monkey King kneeled down and said: “Master! Master!” Master said: “Where are you from? Before you kneel down, first tell us your hometown and name.” The Monkey King: “Disciple is from Flower-Fruit Mountain in the Curtain of Water Cavern.”

Master Puti heard, and shouted: “Liar! Chase out that trickster!” The Monkey King frantically said: “I did not lie.” The Master said: “If you didn’t lie, then why did you say you lived at Flower-Fruit Mountain? Flower-Fruit Mountain and Triple Star Cavern are very far apart. How could you get here?” The Monkey King said: “I went over the sea and searched for several years before getting here.” Only upon this did the master nod slightly, asking again: “What is your last name?” The Monkey King said: “I don’t have parents or a last name.” Master said: “If you don’t have parents, were you born on a tree?” The Monkey King said: “Even though I wasn’t born on a tree, I grew from a rock. On Flower-Fruit Mountain there was a rock. Then the rock cracked open and I was born.” The Master heard, and was secretly happy as he said: “As said, you were born of nature. Walk a little so I could see.” The monkey leaped up and walked a few steps.

The Master laughed and said: “When you walk, you resemble an ape eating fruits. So your last name could be Sun!” The Monkey King was very happy at this, and said: “Okay, okay! Master please give me a name too.” The Master said: “Okay. I will call you Wukong Sun.” The King got a name, and was happier. From then on, he stayed in Triple Star Cavern to learn Alchemy.

One day, Master Puti was teaching his disciples. As Wukong listened, he looked very happy, dancing around with a smile on his face. The Master saw, and asked: “Wukong Sun, why are you moving down there?” Wukong said: “When I heard master say something good, I was excited, and my limbs randomly moved. Please forgive me!” The Master said: “You come to here…what do you want to learn?” Wukong said: “I will listen to master.”

Master said: “My learnings have three hundred and sixty kinds. I will teach you the ‘arts’ kind.” Wukong asked: “Does it grant immortality?” The Master exclaimed: “No, no!” Wukong shook his head and said: “No, I don’t want to learn this.”

The Master asked again: “Then how about I teach you the ‘quiet’ kind.” Wukong asked: “Does it include immortality?” Master said: “No, no.” Wukong shook his head too and said: “I don’t want to learn this.”

Again the Master asked: “how about the ‘action’ type?” Wukong asked: “So it could grant immortality?” The Master said: “No, no!” Again Wukong shook his head and said: “I don’t want to learn this either.”

The Master heard this and shouted: “You ape! Not wanting to learn this and not wanting to learn that. What do you want to learn?” The Master jumped down from the stage, and with a ruler he hit Wukong on the head three times. Then, with his hands behind him walked into his house, closing the door and not coming out again.

When the others saw this, they all blamed Wukong: “You don’t want to learn this and don’t want to learn that, and also arguing with Master! Now, Master is angry and has went inside so that even we can’t hear his teachings!” But Wukong was only grinning, not worried at all. He already guessed Master’s meaning: being hit three times means to have him pay attention at midnight; hands behind his back and closing his door means to walk in from the back door to secretly teach him.

Wukong at the front of Triple-Star Cavern wished the sky to be dark just then. When night fell, he lay recumbent on his bed, closing his eyes, but didn’t really sleep. At midnight, he quietly got up, put on his clothes, and then quietly came to Master’s back door. Seeing that the door was half open, Wukong secretly applauded. He walked into the house and came to the front of Master’s bed and saw that Master was sleeping. Wukong didn’t dare bother him, so he kneeled in front of the bed. After a little while, Master flipped around.

Wukong at once called out: “Master! I am here waiting for you!” Master sat up and said: “Wukong Sun! You don’t sleep in the front, but what are you doing here?” Wukong said: “Master used the ruler to hit me three times; isn’t that telling me to come here at midnight to have you teach me?” Master thought: “He is really born of the sky and land, or else how could his acumen have understood what I meant?” So, he said to Wukong: “Okay, come here so I could teach you the incantation to immortality.” Wukong thanked him, and kneeling by the bed, he diligently memorized Master’s teachings of the formula to immortality.

When Wukong memorized the formula, thanked Master, and walked out, the east was starting to light. Wukong went back to his bed, and on purpose shook his bed very loudly and yelled: “Its morning! Quickly waken!” The others were deeply sleeping, and none knew that Wukong already learned the incantation to immortality!

Very quickly another ten years passes. One day, Master was speaking on the stage when he suddenly asked: “Where is Wukong?” Wukong answered: “I am here!” Master said: “Come here. I will furthermore teach you seventy-two types of transformations.” Wukong walked up, and Master whispered to him the formula to transformations. Wukong memorized it, and after many practices, he learned all the transformations. After a few days, Master taught Wukong the Flipping Cloud, and every flip could go eighteen thousand miles.

One day, Wukong and everyone were talking at the bottom of a pine tree when someone asked: “Wukong, our teacher has taught you these transformations; have you learned all these?” Wukong answered: “I practiced the formulas that Master taught me, and I have memorized all of them. Everyone asked: “How about you performing so everyone could see?” Wukong heard this, and asked: “What do you want me to turn into?” Someone asked: “Just turn into this pine tree.” Wukong then turned into a pine tree. Everyone saw, and clapping they laughed, saying together: “Good Monkey!”

But unexpectedly their voices disturbed Master. He walked out and asked: “Who is it here that is noisy?” Everyone could only say: “Master, just then Wukong was transforming for fun. We told him to turn into a pine tree, and he turned into a tree. We saw, and we all clapped in joy. But we disturbed Master, so we hope that you could forgive us.”

Master thought for a little while, and said to the people: “You could go back into the Cavern.” Then he called: “Wukong, come here! I ask you, what tree are you turning to, showing off in front of everyone?” Wukong drooped his head and said: “Please forgive me.” Master said: “I won’t blame you. But please leave here.” Wukong heard, and crying said: “Master, where do you want me to go?” Master said: “Go back to where you have come from.”

Wukong couldn’t do anything, so he could only thank Master and farewell everyone. He flipped a cloud and came to Flower-Fruit Mountain. Wukong jumped from the clouds and yelled: “Children, I have come!” From beside the slopes near the Curtain of Water Cavern, the undergrowth, and the forest leaped out, big and small, thousands of little monkeys, who circled the Monkey King. Wukong then told them closely about how he learned.

The monkeys were all very happy at hearing this, and took out good wine and fresh fruit to welcome the Monkey King. Wukong then said: “I will tell you another happy thing, that we now have a last name!” The monkeys asked: “What is your last name?” Wukong replied: “My last name is Sun, and I’m Wukong Sun.” The monkeys clapped and cheered and said: “King is Old Sun, so we are two sun, three sun, four sun, and little sun. We’re a family Sun, a country of Sun!” The monkeys came to cheer Wukong wine. There was grape wine, apple wine, and in big and little bowls, it was really everyone being happy!
