八戒讨救兵,打死白骨精

Bajie Seeks Reinforcements

After Tangseng excluded Wukong, the master and disciples continued west, and came to a pine forest. Tangseng stopped his horse and said: “Bajie, I am hungry. Can you go find some food?”

Bajie came out of the forest and walked a few miles west, but could not find a single family. He became tired, and thought: “I have walked this far but couldn’t find a single house; let me sleep first!” He threw himself down in the bushes and slept.

Tangseng waited for a long time in the pine forest, but still Bajie was not back and he was very worried.  Shaseng said: “Master, wait over here. I will go to find him back.” As he said, he took up his cane and went out of the forest to find Bajie.

Tangseng sat there by himself in the forest for a little while and felt bored, so he stood up and started taking a walk. He walked out of the forest, raised his head, and saw that ahead there was a pagoda, and at the top there was blinking gold light. Tangseng was very happy at seeing this, so he quickly walked to it. As he neared the pagoda, seeing that the doors were wide open, he lightly walked inside.

But who knows that as soon as Tangseng entered through the door, the door slammed shut. Tangseng only heard a high-pitched voice cackling: “Haha! Haha! It’s really come without a waste of effort. I used all my strength, but still couldn’t catch you, but now you have come to my doors yourself!” Tangseng raised his head, and saw a female devil standing in front of him. The devil shouted: “Small ones, quickly capture Tangseng and hang him up!” A group of small demons rushed up, caught Tangseng, and tied him up with ropes and hung him in the back house.

Then say that Shaseng went to search for Bajie. He walked more than ten miles, but couldn’t find a shadow. Suddenly, Shaseng heard speech in the bushes. He brushed open the vegetation with his cane and saw that it was Bajie talking in sleep. Shaseng bent down and held on to Bajie’s ear, and awakened him: “Fool! Master told you to find food; why do you sleep here? Quickly go back because master is very worried already!”

Shaseng and Bajie walked back, but when they looked into the forest, they couldn’t find Tangseng. The two could only walk out of the forest to search for Tangseng. They saw that not far ahead there was a pagoda. Bajie said: “Brother, master might be in the pagoda! Let’s go look.”

Bajie and Shaseng came to the front of the pagoda and saw the door tightly closed. They walked up, and as they knocked on the door, they called: “Open the door! Open the door!”

The door opened, and a female devil stood in there. She held a sword in each of her hands, and she ferociously asked: “Where do you monks come from, that do dare trouble here?” Bajie looked and quickly said: “Devil! If my master Tangseng is in your house, quickly hand him back, so that I don’t have to fight inside with my rake.” The devil laughed and said: “Correct, Tangseng is in my Bone Cavern, but don’t even expect to get him back!” Bajie was angry, and he raised his palladium and attacked. The devil wasn’t scared, waving her swords to fight back. Shaseng went forward to help Bajie. They fought for more than thirty rounds in midair. Bajie slowly began to lose his strength, so he said: “Brother, fight for a little while with the devil. I will first relieve.” He left Shaseng and found a place with deep grass. He dove inside, laid recumbent, and hid.

Shaseng and the devil fought for a little while. As they fought, Shaseng missed, and was caught by the devil. The devil brought Shaseng into the cavern, and gave him to the small demons, who were told to tie Shaseng up.

Let’s say that when Bajie Zhu left Shaseng and hid in the grass, at first he could still hear the sounds of battle, but later he slowly fell asleep. He slept all the way until midnight. After he woke, he rubbed his eyes, and looking at the stars knew that it was midnight. Then he heard that there was no sounds of battle in midair, and concluded: “Shaseng must have been captured by the devil, and I can’t rescue him by myself. Let me still go back to my old home.” Bajie was thinking about this, when suddenly heard the dragon horse say: “Brother!” Bajie heard this, and was so scared he tripped. Then he frantically got up and ran. The horse stuck out his head and bit his clothes, then said: “Brother, don’t be scared. I was originally the west sea’s small dragon king, so originally I already knew how to talk.” Bajie asked: “What do you have to say?” The dragon said: “Brother, try to think of a plan to rescue master!”

Bajie heard, and thought for a little while, and asked the dragon horse: “Do you have a place to go?” The dragon said: “So what if I have a place to go?” Bajie said: “If you have a place to go, then quickly escape. I will carry to luggage to the Gao Village to be the son in law I used to be.” The dragon heard, and again bit Bajie’s clothes, and with tears said: “Brother, you must not leave!”

Bajie said: “Shaheshang and master have been caught by the devil, and I couldn’t beat the devil. What would I do if I don’t leave?” The dragon answered: “Brother, if you go invite one person, then master could be rescued.” Bajie asked: “Who do you intend me to invite?” The dragon said: “Quickly go to Flower-Fruit Mountain to invite big brother Wukong Sun. His power could beat the devil and rescue master.” Bajie said: “No, this wouldn’t work. That monkey hates me, so he wouldn’t come.”

The dragon said: “Our big brother truly wants to protect Tangseng to the west, so he would come. After you see him, don’t say that master is danger; only say that master is thinking of him. After he arrives here and sees master tied up, he would surely fight the devils to rescue master.” Bajie said: “Okay. Wait here while I try.” The dragon said: “Quickly go, quickly go.”

Bajie heard the words of the dragon horse, so he carried his rake and went east on a cloud until he reached Flower-Fruit Mountain. Bajie saw Wukong sitting on a stone chair. In front of him were about a thousand monkeys in rows, and as they called “King!” they kneeled down and kowtowed. Bajie wanted to see Wukong, but he was scared, so he slipped into the group of monkeys and together with them kowtowed to Wukong.

Wukong sat in a high place, and with his fiery golden eyes, he could see all clearly, so he loudly shouted on purpose: “The stranger at the bottom who is randomly kowtowing, where are you from? Catch him and bring him up for me!” As soon as he finished, the little monkeys rushed forward, caught Bajie Zhu, and bought him to Wukong’s front.

Wukong pretended to not recognize him, and asked: “From where have you stranger come?” Bajie kept his head down and said: “I am not a stranger, I am an acquaintance.” Wukong said: “Raise your head for me to see.” Bajie raised his mouth. Wukong couldn’t resist laughing as he said: “Are you not Bajie Zhu? You are not going with Tangseng to the west to seek scriptures, and what are you doing here?”

Bajie said: “Master misses you, so he told me to invite you.”

Wukong said: “You are tricking me! He wrote that slip of paper himself, so why would he miss me?”

Bajie said: “Master was riding on a horse and called ‘disciple’. I didn’t hear, and Shaseng didn’t hear him either. Then master thought of you, and said that you were better than us.”

Wukong heard this, walked down from his seat, and said to Bajie: “Brother, you come from far away; let me bring you to view the scenery of this mountain and play a little.” Bajie said: “Brother, master is waiting for you, so I think I will not be able to play.” Wukong said: “It is not easy for you to come once, so let’s still go to enjoy the scenery.” Bajie could only follow Wukong as he walked on the mountain. The two joked for a little while and walked down the mountain. Beside the road were a few little monkeys who held fresh fruits who kneeled down and said: “Saint, please use breakfast.” Wukong laughed as he said to Bajie: “Brother, you have a big appetite, so eating fruits won’t make you full. Here I don’t have other good things, so please first eat a few.”

Bajie said: “Even though my appetite is big, I still like fruits. Hand it over; I want to eat a few to taste the new.” After the two finished eating the fruits, the sun was already high up. Bajie said: “Monkey brother, master is still there waiting for us, let us go there earlier.” Wukong said: “You could still go into the Curtain of Water Cavern to play for a little while!” Bajie said: “Thanks brother for your nice thoughts. But master has waited for a long time, so I wouldn’t go into the cavern.” Wukong said: “If you are hurried, then I won’t hold you for long. Let’s farewell here.” Bajie said: “brother, you’re not going?” Wukong said: “I go where? Here I am free, so why be a monk? I won’t go anywhere!” Bajie heard, and not daring to speak, nodded his head and left.

As soon as Bajie left, Wukong said to the monkeys: “You guys stay here to look over our home; I will still go to protect Tangseng to the west to seek scriptures.” The monkeys surprisingly said: “Just then didn’t king say that you won’t go anywhere?” Wukong said: “That fool coming to find me signals that Tangseng is in danger, so how could I not go? I just don’t want that fool to know!” After he finished, he went on a cloud to find Tangseng.

Wukong secretly tailed Bajie to the top of Bone Cavern. Wukong stood on a cloud and looked down, and saw           that on the road there was a small group of little demons, carrying a sedan chair towards Bone Cavern. Wukong descended, and turned into a little demon. He pulled on a demon that was carrying the chair and said: “Come, let me help you carry for a while!” Wukong carried the sedan chair as he asked the little demon: “Where are you going? Who is in the chair?” the demon replied: “Bone Wife caught Tangseng, and sent us to pick up her mother to eat Tangseng meat. The old lady is the one in the chair.”

Wukong wiped his face, and turned back to his true self. He battered around with a stick, killing the old devil in the chair and all the little devils that were carrying it. Wukong pulled off a handful of hair, and then he blew on it, transforming it into the group of little demons. He then turned himself into the shape of the old devil, sitting on the chair which his “little devils” carried towards Bone Cavern.

When Bajie Zhu couldn’t get Wukong to come, he became very angry. He jumped from the clouds, raised his palladium and smashed it towards the door of the Bone Cavern, and he cursed as he raged. The female devil transformed into a clear smoke that floated out and went behind Bajie. Then the devil caught Bajie, and tied him up along with Tangseng and Shaseng.

At this time, a little demon reported: “The old lady has arrived!” The female devil was very happy at hearing this, as she quickly went out to welcome her.

The female devil came to the door, and from the sedan chair she helped down the old devil, and together they entered the cavern. The old devil said to the female devil: “Where is Tangseng? Quickly bring me to see!”

The female devil led the old devil to the back house.  High up in a row at the old house hung Tangseng, Bajie, and Shaseng. Below boiled a big pot of water so that as soon as the old devil arrived, Tangseng could be cooked and eaten. The female devil said: “Mother please look, the one that is hung the highest up is Tangseng.”

The old devil walked in front of Tangseng, looked at him, and said: “I have heard that Tangseng has a powerful disciple called Wukong Sun; which one here is him?” The women devil said: “That monkey head isn’t here. He was driven away by Tangseng back to Flower-Fruit Mountain! It’s my plan that tricked Tangseng to chase him away so that I could catch him!” The old one asked: “Oh? What method did my daughter use?”

The female devil pleasingly said: “Mother, please look.” As she was saying this, she turned into a girl who was carrying food. She said: “I turned into this girl to bring food to Tangseng, but was recognized by that monkey. His staff came down, so I left a corpse, and then left as smoke. Tangseng didn’t know the truth in this, so he silently recited the Tighten Loop Incantation, making the monkey’s head hurt so much.”

Then, the devil turned into an old women and said: “Then I turned into an old woman to find my daughter, but I was recognized by the monkey again. I saw him raise his staff, so I transformed into smoke, again leaving a dead body. Tangseng saw that the monkey killed a person again, so he recited the Tighten Loop Incantation twenty times, making that monkey head hurt dead and alive.”

As she was talking, the devil transformed again into an old man and said: “I frantically turned into an old man to go onto the mountain to search for my wife and daughter. But that monkey went again with his staff, so I left a dead body and escaped by transforming into smoke. When Tangseng saw him kill three people in a row, he chased away that monkey.”

When Tangseng, hanging on the girder, saw the devil turn into the figures that Wukong killed, he knew that he had been tricked by the devil and had wrongfully blamed Wukong. He could not resist sighing: “Oh Wukong, I have wrongfully blamed you!”

The devil heard Tangseng and started laughing pleasingly: “Stupid monk, too bad that you are regretting too late! That Wukong Sun is being his Command Sky Saint on Flower-Fruit Mountain right now! As for you, you will be in the pot!”

The devil only cared for laughing, but didn’t notice that when the old devil heard Tangseng’s words, he swiped his face and turned back to his regular form. Then he said: “Master, Wukong has come to rescue you!” From his ear Wukong took out his Gold Wrapped Staff, and right at the female devil he smashed his staff. The devil wasn’t quick enough to escape, and was killed by Wukong’s strike.

After Wukong killed the devil, he quickly let down his master, Bajie, and Shaseng. Bajie and Shaseng both took up their weapons and killed all the little demons and devils in the cavern.

Tangseng looked down, and at the spot where the devil lay there appeared a skeleton. Wukong said: “Master look, on the skull there are the words ‘Bone Wife’. That is the true form of the devil.”

Tangseng was very thankful, and said: “Wukong, thanks for you!” Wukong laughed and said: “No thanks, no thanks. If only you wouldn’t recite the Tighten Loop Incantation again!” Tangseng and his disciples again resumed their journey west.
